In educational institutions, where collaboration and communication drive academic excellence, the ability to navigate complex and sensitive conversations is essential. It can be all the difference between thriving, high-performing teams and fractured ones.

Universities are melting pots of ideas and diverse perspectives, where discussions can easily become complex and high-stakes. That’s why it’s crucial for staff and faculty to have the right skills and tools to engage in constructive dialogue with confidence and care. Facilitated conversations, for instance, offer a structured approach that not only prevents misunderstandings from escalating but also builds a culture of openness, trust, and collaboration — key ingredients for any successful educational institution.

This is especially true at The University of Manchester, one of the UK’s most prestigious universities, renowned worldwide for its cutting-edge research and quality of teaching. With a rich history spanning nearly 200 years, a vibrant community of over 40,000 students, and a global reputation for innovation, Manchester has always been a trailblazer. Investing in communication skills ensures that the university’s faculty and staff are empowered to cultivate an inclusive, forward-thinking environment that upholds the institution’s distinguished legacy.

Partnering with TCM: addressing challenges proactively

Recognising the importance of addressing grievances early through informal resolution, and supporting managers with these pivotal soft skills, The University of Manchester partnered with The TCM Group to deliver a bespoke one-day version of our Facilitated Conversations course.

The training course attracted a diverse mix of HR professionals, managers, and lecturers across the three cohorts, with the training for each led by our experienced transformation consultant, Thoralf Kretzschmar.

The comprehensive course content was designed to equip staff with vital skills to navigate difficult conversations, enhance team dynamics and build confidence as a manager. It focused on developing practical techniques for holding constructive dialogue, enabling participants to address issues proactively. The deeply interactive format saw them engaging in role play to act out real-world scenarios and implement the theory.

Impact and fostering meaningful change

Feedback from the cohorts highlighted a significant increase in their confidence to handle sensitive discussions and a marked improvement in team relationships.

Other delegates went away with a new perspective on conflict and how to handle it at different stages, as well as an understanding of the value of facilitating over problem solving. An outstanding 67% of the delegates reported that the knowledge and skills of the trainer exceeded their expectations.

It was fantastic to hear how well the sessions were received and their impact on the team. As a result of this initiative, The University of Manchester has witnessed a positive shift in workplace culture, enhancing collaboration and driving performance. It underscores the significance of investing in communication skills to unlock the full potential of an academic institution.
