What is resilience in the workplace?

Resilience in the workplace is the capacity to adapt, recover, and even grow in response to stress, challenges, or adversity. It’s not about avoiding problems but rather about developing the mindset, tools, and strategies to overcome them effectively. Resilient employees can manage pressure, maintain productivity, and sustain their wellbeing, even during times of significant change.

Key attributes of workplace resilience include:

  • Adaptability: The ability to pivot and adjust to new circumstances.
  • Emotional regulation: Managing stress and maintaining composure.
  • Problem-solving skills: Finding effective solutions during crises.
  • Collaboration: Leaning on and supporting team members during challenging times.
  • Growth mindset: Viewing setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow.

Which ones do you think you could improve? It’s ok if you want to say them all!

The 5 roles of coaching in building workplace resilience

Coaching provides a structured and personalised approach to developing resilience. Whether through one-on-one sessions, team coaching, or organisational initiatives, coaching equips employees with the tools they need to face challenges with confidence and clarity.

1. Empowering emotional resilience. Coaching helps employees understand and regulate their emotions. For example, a manager struggling with the pressure of a new project can work with a coach to identify stressors, develop coping mechanisms, and adopt a proactive mindset to tackle challenges.

2. Strengthening problem-solving skills. Coaches encourage employees to approach problems with a solutions-oriented mindset. By guiding individuals through challenges, they help them develop critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills. This not only enhances individual resilience but also benefits the organisation as a whole.

3. Promoting a growth mindset. A growth mindset — the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed — is a cornerstone of resilience. Coaches work with employees to reframe failures as learning opportunities, turning setbacks into stepping stones for personal and professional growth. For instance, an employee who faces rejection on a major proposal can, through coaching, learn to analyse what went wrong, refine their approach, and re-engage with renewed confidence.

4. Enhancing communication and collaboration. Team coaching focuses on building psychological safety and fostering open communication, which are critical for collective resilience. When teams feel supported and trust each other, they can navigate challenges more effectively and maintain high performance.

5. Building long-term wellbeing. Coaching addresses not just immediate challenges but also long-term well-being. Coaches encourage practices like mindfulness, time management, and work-life balance, ensuring employees have the tools to sustain resilience over time.

How your organisation will be impacted by building resilience:

When resilience becomes a cultural norm, organisations thrive. Resilient employees contribute to:

  • Higher productivity: Employees can maintain focus and effectiveness despite disruptions.
  • Reduced burnout: Resilience mitigates stress and promotes well-being.
  • Stronger team dynamics: Resilient teams collaborate more effectively and support each other through challenges.
  • Enhanced innovation: Employees with a growth mindset are more open to taking risks and exploring creative solutions.
  • Improved retention: A supportive environment that prioritises resilience leads to higher employee satisfaction and loyalty.

What you can do to build resilience within your organisation:

Organisations can take several steps to integrate coaching for resilience:

  • Offer personalised coaching: Provide employees access to one-on-one coaching sessions to address individual challenges and build tailored strategies for resilience.
  • Invest in team coaching: Use team coaching to strengthen collaboration, align goals, and create a culture of mutual support.
  • Train leaders as coaches: Equip managers with coaching skills to support their teams, fostering resilience at every level of the organisation.
  • Incorporate resilience training: Include resilience-building modules in professional development programs, emphasising skills like adaptability and emotional intelligence.
  • Encourage continuous feedback: Create an environment where feedback is viewed as an opportunity for growth, reinforcing a resilient mindset.
