Mental Health and Complex Conversations (Half Day)

Ensuring engagement and inclusion in workplace mediation

LOCATION:Online, or Classroom-Taught
The Mental Health and Mediation Workshop was a very informative and engaging session that addressed key objectives in a practical and interesting way. My understanding and knowledge of the topic has become much clearer. The workshop was very useful and I can now considerably use the skills I have learnt to put into practice.”
Jane Hall, Consultancy Manager at Kent County Council

This workshop explores the considerations involved in mediating when parties are suffering from mental health issues in order to help the mediator get the best possible outcomes for the parties, whilst protecting the integrity of mediation and the mediator.

The issues of mediators assessing parties’ capacity for mediation are also addressed. Delegates also look at the core values of inclusivity and self-determination, including reflection on personal hooks, triggers, blocks and barriers and what we need as mediating professionals in this context. We will also look at the practical tools, techniques and interventions to facilitate mediating with mental health more effectively, with a variety of real-life (anonymized) examples, from both the trainer and the delegates.

This course utilizes a variety of teaching styles, including facilitator presentation, participant discussion, personal reflection, group exercises and scenarios, workshops and role-plays. All activities take into account participants’ individual learning styles and provide a broad range of experiential and shared learning.

After attending this specialist workshop, delegates will:

  • Gain an appreciation of the effect mental well-being has on the workplace and its relationship to conflict
  • Recognize some of the main symptoms of mental illness
  • Understand how to deal with crisis situations
  • Learn how to evaluate a party’s capacity to engage in complex conversations
  • Develop the skills to look after your well-being before, during and after a complex conversation
