United by Purpose: AfriKids’ Leadership Development Success Story
When AfriKids reached out to Engage Leadership, the organisation was at a pivotal moment. Working across North Ghana to create sustainable change for children through locally-led initiatives, AfriKids faced a unique leadership challenge: how to empower their junior managers to step confidently into leadership roles while staying true to their core values of integrity, unity, and impact.
The team needed more than just standard leadership training. Their emerging leaders required an approach that honoured their principles of being locally-led and empowering, while giving practical tools to thrive in complex environments.
The Partnership
After carefully assessing AfriKids’ needs, Engage Leadership designed a bespoke one-day intensive programme focused on collaborative leadership excellence. The programme was specifically crafted to align with AfriKids’ mission of creating sustainable change while respecting both people and the planet.
Martha Strehler-Weston, Partnerships Manager at AfriKids, explains: “AfriKids decided to book leadership training with the TCM Group to help our global team build the skills needed to make a real difference in our communities.”
The Programme
On January 28, 2025, AfriKids hosted a special away day that brought together team members from Ghana and the UK. This meaningful gathering united both long-serving staff and newly recruited team members, creating a rich mix of perspectives and experiences.
The team gathered at their Soho office for an immersive leadership development day. The programme was divided into four interactive sessions:
- Leadership as a Coach: Team members engaged in coaching conversation roleplays that transformed their understanding of active listening and powerful questioning techniques.
- Building Trust and Relationships: Through targeted activities, participants identified trust gaps within their teams and developed strategies to bridge them. This proved especially valuable for integrating new team members with veterans.
- Delegation for Empowerment: The session challenged traditional notions of delegation, introducing frameworks that ensure accountability while genuinely empowering team members.
- Quality Conversations and Managing Difficult Dialogues: This module provided practical frameworks for navigating culturally sensitive conversations across diverse communities.
The Impact
What makes the AfriKids-Engage Leadership partnership particularly powerful is how the programme wove together leadership development with AfriKids’ fundamental mission and values. By integrating concepts of servant and feminist leadership approaches, the training reinforced AfriKids’ commitment to creating sustainable, locally-led solutions.
For Engage Leadership, the AfriKids project exemplifies their commitment to developing transformational leadership strategies that build fair, just, sustainable, and inclusive organisational cultures. By tailoring their approach to AfriKids’ unique context and values, they delivered not just a training day, but a catalyst for ongoing organisational growth.
The true measure of success isn’t just what happened in the training room that day, but how it continues to shape how the team works together to create meaningful change for children across North Ghana.
